The war of funerary flame or the great war of vengeance[1] was a war waged between the Dragon King Nibelung, Heavenly Principles, and their allies for the control of Teyvat. It took place during the Funerary Year. It ultimately ended in Nibelung's defeat and severely damaged the Heavenly Principles' functions. The consequences of the war irrevocably changed Teyvat's natural order.

Overview[]

At some point in the past, Nibelung met Seutervoinen, a voyager traversing the sea of stars. She warned him that his world was doomed to destruction and urged him to flee with her, but he refused as he didn't want to abandon his kin and vowed to lead them to the stars.[2] Some time after that meeting, for unspecified reasons, Nibelung decided to leave Teyvat. He created the Three Moons and their goddesses to govern the world in his absence.[3]

At some point after his departure, in the year known as "When the Doves Held Branches," the Heavenly Principles arrived and imposed a new order over the world. The Seven Sovereigns revolted against the otherworldly invader, and in response, the Heavenly Principles created the Four Shades to battle against them. After forty years, the sovereigns were defeated, paving the way for the Heavenly Principles to transform Teyvat as they pleased.[4] The moon goddesses were too weak to challenge them, but as their purpose of governing and protecting the planet didn't conflict with the Heavenly Principles' aims, they weren't removed, and the two parties coexisted in a precarious peace.[5]

At some point, Seutervoinen arrived to Teyvat, she was confused as to why Nibelung was absent but did not want to disturb the Heavenly Principles, so she cast her consciousness into the body of a youth in the Golden City of Hyperborea and listened to the people's debates. At the time, the people had angered the Angels by questioning the progress of knowledge and the priests were arguing amongst themselves on how to quell their wrath. Seutervoinen snuck into the priests' chamber and refuted all their arguments of heresy, pointing out their inconsistencies in their concept of sin. Finally, the chief priest told him to plead his case to Koitar, the First Angel, below the Irminsul tree.[2]

Seutervoinen descended underground and met Koitar, inquiring her about the most forbidden origins of Teyvat and telling her of his true origins as a voyager from afar. Upon hearing his words, the angel's crown broke and she discovered true freedom for the first time. She fell in love with the youth, telling him the secrets of creation, and the youth swore an oath to stand by her side in rebellion against the Heavenly Principles. This act of defiance was witnessed by the Three Moon Goddesses.[6]

The Funerary Year[]

Nibelung returned from the sky, bringing with him the perilous and corrupting power of the Abyss.[5][3] He led the sovereigns in a fierce war against the Heavenly Principles.[7] The moon goddesses argued among themselves over whether or not they should ally with Nibelung, their creator, or remain neutral to prevent the world from being completely destroyed. However, Nibelung, judging their inaction as disloyalty, imprisoned the goddesses and turned the moons into weapons of destruction.[5]

Ultimately, the Heavenly Principles killed Nibelung, but at great cost to its functions.[8] They could no longer suppress the "original order" of the world.[1] Viewing the weaponization of the moons as a violation of the peace treaty, they destroyed the Eternal Moon and Iridescent Moon and flung the Frost Moon beyond the skies.[5] To heal the ravaged land and suppress the effects of the Abyss, they cast down celestial nails, which also had the effect of devastating the human civilizations that survived.[9]

According to Vol. 4 of Records of Jueyun, thirty days after the union, a disaster struck; Koitar and Seutervoinen fled into exile, but the disaster eventually caught up with them. A more reliable account states that their golden city was laid to waste by a Celestial Nail, The Heavenly Principles punished the couple by separating them and wiping their memories.
