The term snapshotting refers to the state in which attributes are fixed on a long-lasting ability, effect, entity, or summon based on the character's attributes during the ability's activation. A snapshotted ability will not receive the additional buffs the character obtains after its activation.
For example, Xiangling's Pyronado will receive the ATK Bonus for the entirety of its duration when cast inside Bennett's Fantastic Voyage field — even if Xiangling walks outside the buff's area of effect or it expires prematurely. However, the ATK Bonus will not affect Pyronado if cast before Bennett's Fantastic Voyage - regardless of whether Xiangling stays in the buff's area of effect.
In some cases, weapons can also snapshot their own effects. For example, a bow that increases attack on a weak spot hit may increase the attack of the hit that triggered this effect.
Buffs
Buffs are effects that improve a character's ability or attributes. While they can arise from character talents, constellations, artifact sets, weapon passives, or other external sources.
- Static Buffs - The buff does not scale off any attribute, or if the attribute which the buff scales off changes during the buff's duration, the buff will not change.
- Dynamic Buffs - If the attribute which the buff scales off changes during the buff's duration, the buff will change.
- Direct Buffs - Buffs that do not modify the damage dealer's attributes, and instead directly apply to real-time damage calculations. These buffs are completely unaffected by snapshotting. This is a separate concept from Static and Dynamic Buffs and coexists with them.

Talents
Talents are character abilities that can receive static or dynamic buffs. While there are several talents that can be intuitively determined to be non-snapshottable, some are not - as such, it is important to clarify and distinguish the two types:
- Snapshottable Talents - Attributes are fixed after an ability's activation.
- Non-Snapshottable Talents - Damage is recalculated during every instance of the ability's activation based on the character's current attributes.
Note: Most talents that were not included do not have a delay on their damage or effects upon their activation. Non-Snapshottable talents isn't an exhaustive list but is used to provide clarity to some talents that may have similar mechanics but do not snapshot.

Elemental Reactions
Primarily, the previous sections only take account physical or elemental damage from character abilities. Reactions have a dependency elemental mastery, but depending on its type it may or may not snapshot.
Starting from Version 1.4, the snapshotting of elemental mastery for transformative reactions such as Electro-Charged, Overloaded, Shatter, Superconduct, and Swirl was removed, and replaced with real-time damage calculations. Therefore, transformative reaction damage bonus from elemental mastery buffs gained after an snapshottable talent's activation is still gained even after its activation - increasing damage of the talent. In short, order or timing is no longer an issue and is only limited by the buff's duration.
For example, the Superconduct damage triggered by Ganyu's Celestial Shower will be boosted by Sucrose's Catalyst Conversion even after Ganyu's talent is cast. Prior to the version changes, the Superconduct damage would only be boosted if Sucrose's talent was triggered before Ganyu's burst.[1]
- Amplifying Reactions (Melt and Vaporize) - Bonus elemental mastery can be snapshotted to snapshottable talents, but are fully bound to its limitations.
- Transformative Reactions (Electro-Charge, Overload, Shatter, Superconduct, and Swirl) - Bonus elemental mastery bypasses snapshotting entirely.
In summary, the amplification reaction damage bonus resulting from buffs to elemental mastery can be considered to be a static buff while the transformative reaction damage bonus resulting from the same buffs can be considered to be a dynamic buff.
Notes
- ↑ For example, if one casts Pyronado while standing on a Pyro panel, the Pyronado will retain the 60% Pyro DMG Bonus for its whole duration, even if one steps outside of the Pyro panel. On the other hand, if one casts Pyronado while outside of a Pyro panel, then it cannot be buffed further during its duration even if one walks on to a Pyro panel.
Change History
- "Snapshotting" for Elemental Mastery boosts to damage from the major elemental reactions (Shatter, Electro-Charged, Superconduct, Overloaded, and Swirl) was removed, and replaced with 'real-time' damage calculations.
- Snapshotting was released.
