Need more info on enemy shields.

Shields are protective barriers that block damage to characters or enemies.

Character Shields

Characters can gain shields through the Crystallize elemental reaction or by using certain talents or weapons. These shields have a set amount of health determined when the shield is created; when the active character takes damage, damage is dealt to shield health first, and any remaining damage afterward is subtracted from the character's health normally. Shields often have intrinsic damage absorption bonuses that increase the amount of damage absorbed by each shield health point (usually against certain types of elemental damage).

When a character has more than one shield, the damage dealt by an enemy will affect every active shield simultaneously.[1]

Crystallize Shields

Shields gained from picking up the Elemental Shards dropped by Crystallize reactions have shield health based on the level and Elemental Mastery of the character that triggered the reaction. These shields additionally have 250% effectiveness against elemental damage of the same element; in other words, they only take 40% as much damage when absorbing damage of their own element.

Base Crystallize Shield HP is only affected by the character level. For level scaling and other details, see Crystallize.

When the shield takes damage, the damage is scaled down based on the shield's elemental damage absorption bonuses and the active character's Shield Strength attribute.

Note: Shields can only reduce a portion of the incoming damage if it does not exceed the shield's remaining HP. For example: being dealt 500 DMG while having a 100 Shield HP and 250% Element Bonus will deal 250 DMG to the character, not 100 DMG.

Talent Shields

Shields created by talents usually have health based on the character's DEF or Max HP. Shield damage is scaled down by any elemental damage absorption bonuses and the active character's Shield Strength attribute. Some character Talents and Constellations may grant additional damage absorption bonuses to shields generated by the character; these apply multiplicatively.[2]

See Shields/Comparison for a comparison of character shield strength, bonus, duration and cooldown.

The damage taken on talent shields is therefore:

Note: Shields can only reduce a portion of the incoming damage if it does not exceed the shield's remaining HP. For example: being dealt 500 DMG while having a 100 Shield HP and 2 Shield Multiplier will deal 300 DMG to the character, not 150 DMG.

Enemy Shields

Certain enemies also have shields that prevent damage, but their mechanics differ from player shields. Instead of functioning as an extra health bar (with additional damage absorption bonuses), enemy shields are usually based on elemental gauges, and are only slightly damaged by physical attacks, if at all.

Enemies with shields include:

Fatui Skirmishers also have an armor mechanic that is similar to shields, but their armor greatly increases resistance rather than completely blocking damage, and the armor itself does not decrease from non-reaction damage. Other enemies including the Lawachurls have a similar mechanic.

Damage to shields generally follows a rock-paper-scissors mechanic. Pyro more easily destroys Cryo shields, Cryo more easily destroys Electro shields, Electro more easily destroys Hydro shields, and Hydro more easily destroys Pyro shields. Geo shields are easily destroyed with Geo, and Pyro can light Dendro shields on fire.

Elemental Shields are enemy shields based on elemental gauges (rather than HP, but the two can be compared), of which there are three types—Elemental Armor, Elemental Force Shields, and Elemental Guard Shields.[3] Elemental Armor is a shield that does not fully protect enemies from damage: when enemies like Lawachurls or Whopperflowers have their Elemental Armor up, they have increased resistance or other properties but can still be damaged. Elemental Force Shields, on the other hand, fully protect enemies from damage: shields on enemies like Abyss Mages and Large Slimes need to be depleted via elemental reactions before the enemies themselves can take damage. Similarly, Elemental Guard Shields protect enemies from damage in most cases: because these shields are held physically by Hilichurls and Mitachurls, the enemies must be knocked over or attacked from the back (provided they are in a position where they will not turn around) in order to take damage while holding a shield. Otherwise, their shields can be damaged via Burning, Melt, or Physical Damage depending on the type of shield.

Equivalent HP

Compared to character shields (or elite shields), it is harder to break elemental shields through damage. Certain elemental shields are also immune to certain types of damage or will regenerate themselves if not attacked quickly enough.

Where:

  • is the max HP of an enemy.
  • is a ratio that compares the elemental gauge of an enemy's shield with their HP (how much damage a shield takes vs how much the enemy would take). The Shield HP Ratio is usually 1.
  • is a ratio that shows how much a shield can be affected by character damage. The Damage Ratio is usually 0.2 or 0.
    • When Damage Ratio is 0, it means that the elemental shield can not be broken by damage.

This is how an attack's damage is converted into the damage it does to a shield:

Where:

  • is the damage from an attack.
    • The damage-amplifying multipliers of Melt or Vaporize don't work on elemental shields.
    • Damage is equal to 0 if the attack's element matches the shield (excluding Geo).
  • is the equivalent HP of the elemental shield (this compares the enemy's HP with the elemental gauge of the shield).
  • is the actual elemental gauge of the shield.

Cost by Reactions

The most efficient way to remove elemental shields is through elemental reactions.[4]

Where:

  • is the elemental gauge cost of an elemental attack or effect that triggers a reaction with an elemental shield.
  • is a ratio that shows how much the aforementioned attack affected the elemental shield.
    • For example, when using Hydro on a Pyro Shield, the ratio is 2. When using Electro on a Pyro Shield, the ratio is 1.

Note: Cryo Shields on enemies act the same way as Frozen enemies do. The Frozen effect and a Cryo Shield share most characteristics, but because Hydro damage does nothing to Frozen enemies, Cryo Shields are similarly unaffected by Hydro.

Applied Element Shield Element Ratio
Pyro Hydro 0.5
Electro 1
Frozen 2
Geo1 2
Hydro Pyro 2
Electro 1

Electro Pyro 1
Hydro 1

Anemo Pyro 0.5
Hydro 0.5
Electro 0.5
Frozen 0.5
Geo Pyro 0.5
Hydro 0.5
Electro 0.5
Frozen 0.5

[1] Geo Shields can also indirectly react with elements. When a Crystallize reaction is triggered by a Geo Shield, it can react with different elements: Geo Elemental Armor and Geo Elemental Force Shields on enemies can react with Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo, but Geo Elemental Object Shields can only react with Cryo.

Note: For Fatui Skirmishers' Shields, the decrease ratio is special. There is a large difference between elemental damage from the preferred element (the element that reacts best with the shield's element) and elemental damage from other elements.

Enemy Preferred Element Ratio For Preferred Element Ratio For Other Elements
Pyroslinger Bracer Hydro 2 0.1
Hydrogunner Legionnaire Electro 2 0.05
Electrohammer Vanguard Cryo 2 0.11
Cryogunner Legionnaire Pyro 2 0.12

[1] For Hydro, it is 0.

[2] For Hydro, it is 0.

Cost by Shatter

One efficient method of removing a Cryo Shield is by using the Shatter reaction.

Before triggering Shatter, the enemy must be Frozen, which is, in turn, triggered by characters.

When a character triggers Shatter on a Cryo Shield enemy, the elemental gauge of their shield will decrease like so.

The method works with these enemies:

The method does not work with these enemies, which are immune to being Frozen:

Cost by Poise Damage

Geo and Cryo Shields can also be damaged by poise damage (interruption).[5]

Where:

  • is the poise damage from an attack (how much an enemy was knocked back or interrupted by an attack).
  • is the unit conversion, which modifies the elemental gauge.
  • is a ratio that shows the efficiency of the poise damage.
    • The Cost Ratio is determined by Shield Element and Attack Attributes (Strike Type and Attack Type).
    • The Cost Ratio can't stack; it is determined by whichever type of attack does the most damage.
      • For example, when using a claymore against a Geo shield, an attack counts as a Blunt or Heavy attack and a Melee attack. Therefore, the Cost Ratio will only be 0.35 (as opposed to 0.4).
Shield Element Condition Ratio
Geo Strike Type: Blunt 0.35
Attack Type: Melee 0.05
Cryo Strike Type: Blunt 0.15
  • Strike Type and Attack Type are both hidden attributes.
Attribute Value Example
Strike Type Blunt Most Attacks by Claymore characters.
Most Plunge Attacks by Melee characters.
Most Geo Attacks.
Most Explosions.
Slash Most Normal/Charged Attacks by Sword characters.
Most Plunge Attacks (Loop Part) by Sword/Claymore characters.
