Overview |
Shields are protective barriers that block damage to characters or enemies. Player character shields work differently from enemy shields. Below mostly discusses character shields. Enemy shields and breaking them are discussed in Shields/Enemy and Shields/Shield Gauge Data.
Character Shields
Characters can gain shields through the Crystallize elemental reaction or by using certain talents or weapons. These shields have a set amount of health determined when the shield is created; when the active character takes damage, damage is dealt to shield health first, and any remaining damage afterward is subtracted from the character's health normally. Shields often have intrinsic damage absorption bonuses that increase the amount of damage absorbed by each shield health point (usually against certain types of elemental damage).
When a character has more than one shield, the damage dealt by an enemy will affect every active shield simultaneously.[1]
Crystallize Shields
Shields gained from picking up the Elemental Shards dropped by Crystallize reactions have shield health based on the level and Elemental Mastery of the character that triggered the reaction. These shields additionally have 250% effectiveness against elemental damage of the same element; in other words, they only take 40% as much damage when absorbing damage of their own element.
Base Crystallize Shield HP is only affected by the character level. For level scaling and other details, see Crystallize.
When the shield takes damage, the damage is scaled down based on the shield's elemental damage absorption bonuses and the active character's Shield Strength attribute.
If the damage exceeds the shield's health, the damage taken by character is the excess damage multiplied by the same shield bonus multipliers:
Talent Shields
Shields created by talents usually have health based on the character's DEF or Max HP. Shield damage is scaled down by any elemental damage absorption bonuses and the active character's Shield Strength attribute. Some character Talents and Constellations may grant additional damage absorption bonuses to shields generated by the character; these apply multiplicatively.[2]

Thoma spins his polearm, slicing at his foes with roaring flames that deal AoE Pyro DMG and weave themselves into a Scorching Ooyoroi. Scorching Ooyoroi While Scorching Ooyoroi is in effect, the active character's Normal Attacks will trigger Fiery Collapse, dealing AoE Pyro DMG and summoning a Blazing Barrier. Fiery Collapse can be triggered once every 1s. Except for the amount of DMG they can absorb, the Blazing Barriers created in this way are identical to those created by Thoma's Elemental Skill, Blazing Blessing:

Elemental Burst | ||
When Noelle is in the party but not on the field, this ability triggers automatically when your active character's HP falls below 30%: Creates a shield for your active character that lasts for 20s and absorbs DMG equal to 400% of Noelle's DEF. The shield has a 150% DMG Absorption effectiveness against all Elemental and Physical DMG. This effect can only occur once every 60s. |

Hold Takes up the Opening Flourish stance and charges up, forming a shield. DMG Absorption is based on Yun Jin's Max HP and has 150% effectiveness against all Elemental DMG and Physical DMG. The shield lasts until she finishes unleashing her Elemental Skill. When the skill is released, when its duration ends, or when the shield breaks, Yun Jin will unleash the charged energy as an attack, dealing Geo DMG. Based on the time spent charging, it will either unleash an attack at Charge Level 1 or Level 2. |

Enemy Shields
Certain enemies also have shields that prevent or reduce damage, or grant them the ability to use certain attacks, but their mechanics differ from player shields. Instead of functioning as an extra health bar (with additional damage absorption bonuses), enemy shields are usually based on elemental gauges.
The attacks of Shadowy Husks on shielded characters will cause them to activate their special ability at the cost of some of their HP.
