Act I - The Crack of Muskets Breaking the Silence[]
- The Crack of Muskets Breaking the Silence
The Traveler and Paimon take a walk around the Court of Fontaine, having learned that there's a film festival being hosted from The Steambird. When they arrive at the plaza, they run into Xavier, who's pleading to an investor named Morris to bring him funds for his next film; however, Morris has run into a problem and is unable to invest in the film. Xavier wonders how he would pay everyone, including Chiori, who the two quickly realize is the owner of Chioriya Boutique. Nonetheless, he decides to bring them to her as she had helped him a lot, particularly with finding actors from other lands.
They meet Chiori at the aquabus station, where Xavier informs her that he would not be able to secure any funding for his upcoming movie. Chiori reassures him that he shouldn't worry about costs, as the actors she recommended aren't interested in the Mora. Just then, an aquabus arrives from the Clementine Line, bringing Ayaka, Ayato and Yoimiya. The three are pleased to see the Traveler in Fontaine and they enjoy some sightseeing and local food. Xavier then informs them of his problem, which Ayato initially suggests that they resolve the matter in court. Xavier declines this, as the system would be too slow. Ayato then suggests they raise the funds themselves, though Xavier states that they simply don't have enough time. Finally, he suggests they simply perform for free, shocking Xavier as he does not find that even remotely acceptable. Ayato states that he and Ayaka had already planned to work for free, since improving ties with other nations was far more important than wealth. Paimon volunteers as a clapperboard, so Xavier would need to find a director and an assistant.
Yoimiya volunteers as an assistant, leaving the group to find a director to finish the requirements. The Traveler immediately suggests Furina, which makes Xavier nervous but he accepts as there isn't any other choice. Xavier decides on a clockwork ring as a gift, but Yoimiya suggests a dessert instead. Chiori also adds that to make the gift sweeter, they'll also need to praise her.
The Traveler prepares a serving of Fontinalia Mousse and they head to Furina's apartment, where she learns of Xavier's situation. The Traveler provides her a sample of Estelle's blacksmith with the Kamera, convincing her to join in as a director. As she wonders how everyone will be paid, she becomes shocked to learn that she wouldn't be getting paid much. Xavier tells her that he's working on a film adaptation of "The Two Musketeers", which she enjoyed reading. Furina decides to join on the condition that she would have absolute freedom in directing the script, which Xavier grants. She then asks who they would consult on the proper use of muskets, as she hadn't talked to Clorinde in a while and Navia's style would not match the film. Chiori suggests Chevreuse, being acquainted with her and knows where she is. Before Furina leaves to buy macaroni, she asks about the pay of the lead actors, and is shocked upon learning that everyone was basically working for free and remarks on how the gods were smiling on him.
Chiori brings the Traveler to Chevreuse, a young lady wearing an eyepatch who's seemingly reading a book. Chiori tells her that she's working and walks up to her, engaging in short conversation. Chevreuse then stops the other two people, ordering them to hand whatever they were hiding in the book before having Letellier escort them away. She explains to the Traveler that after Marcel was brought to justice, Sinthe production was completely halted, though there were still batches circulating on the market. When Chiori had walked up to her, she also blocked her from view from the owner, who tried to discreetly sell Sinthe to a customer and had to approach the situation from that way to obtain evidence of guilt. Chevreuse learns of the situation from Chiori and agrees to join for free, as she also enjoys the book version. She asks the Traveler to stay with her for a moment while Chiori leaves to inform Xavier that she found someone for the role.
Chevreuse asks the Traveler if they've read "The Two Musketeers" before and summarizes the story for them. The Traveler realizes that there's more going on to what she's saying, and she tells them that she needs their help with a murder case that happened recently, which appears to be copying from the book itself. The Marechaussee Phantom are busy trying to find the suspect and has kept the case secret; she was helping out of personal interest. The Traveler tells her that they'll consider it after filming tomorrow.
Act II - Fiction and Reality Inside and Outside the Frame[]
- Fiction and Reality Inside and Outside the Frame
The next morning, the film crew meets at Hotel Debord to begin filming. The Traveler and Paimon run into Ayaka and Yoimiya just outside. As the group of four entered the building, Ayaka and Yoimiya recount their experience sightseeing around Fontaine together, from watching the Icewind Suite in action to trying Diving for the first time.
Shortly after, Chiori and Chevreuse arrive, the latter having just finished the Special Patrol's morning jog. Furina joins the group behind them, still sleep-deprived from making edits to the script last night. Yoimiya goes off to fetch her a cup of coffee while Ayaka goes with Chiori to get her makeup done. Finally, Xavier and Ayato arrive, having gotten the second floor of the restaurant booked for filming. With them are Veronique, the prop manager, and Bonnot, the lighting technician. With the crew assembled, Xavier takes a brief moment to thank everyone before filming commences in earnest.
Director Furina quickly gets everyone to work, having everyone prepare for the first scene. Yoimiya works with Bonnot to get the lighting set up, while Chiori and Ayato banter while the latter is getting his makeup done. Meanwhile, Veronique and Chevreuse instruct Ayaka on how to properly wield the prop muskets being used for the film, the latter two discussing the maintenance behind their signature weapons.
Suddenly, Ayato excuses himself to talk to Furina, and she eventually calls Ayaka and Chevreuse over to discuss their proposal. With Ayato busy trying to hold conversation with the Palais Mermonia regarding cultural exchanges, he offered to turn his role over to Chevreuse, Ayaka is reluctant, but Furina notes the opportunity to fix a flaw in the original novel, namely that the overbearing older brother tends to overshadow the younger sister and undermining the theme of them supporting each other. After some thought, Chevreuse agrees, and Furina immediately begins making some last minute changes.
Before Ayato leaves for his next meeting, he admits to Chiori that he also made the decision to allow Ayaka to bond with people without him distracting her, alongside agreeing with the Paimon on him not being such a good fit for the role. Then, Furina calls everyone to their positions to begin recording the first scene.
The story begins with two young girls, Tulipe and Iris (played by Chevreuse and Ayaka, respectively), at the baron's estate, worried that their mother had been away for a long time. Finally, Rain (played by Elain, an extra) arrives, with apple turnovers for her two daughters. Tulipe notices the bruises on her mother's arm, which Rain tries to brush off before asking how the two were at home. The two sadly recount the servants taking Iris's doll, spitting on them, and calling them names. Rain tries to cheer them up, talking about their names based on what will eventually become beautiful flowers, as the scene ends.
Furina decides the take was satisfactory and begins preparations for the next scene. Paimon is told not to shout when a scene begins, and Ayaka, Chevreuse, and Elain discuss the performance, noting how easily the former two took to acting.
After the preparatory work is finished, the second scene is filmed, in which the siblings return from a trip only to find Rain dead. Tulipe tries to keep Iris from seeing what had become of their mother, but to no avail. The sight drives Iris to tears, and Tulipe, upon realizing that her drink had been poisoned, becomes furious at the audacity of the aristocrats' behavior. No longer feeling safe, Tulipe tells Iris that they need to leave, seeing no hope of taking revenge right there and then. Iris agrees, but not before leaving the Rainbow Rose they bought with her.
Once the scene ends, Yoimiya, Furina, and Chevreuse waste no time lauding Ayaka's performance in the scene, including how she somehow shed real tears during it. The performer herself notes that the idea of clearing her mind and becoming the character is not dissimilar from her swordplay. After the heat of the moment passes, Furina begins preparing for the next scene.
Filming continues until nighttime, before the group breaks for the day. Chevreuse catches up to the Traveler and Paimon to discuss the murder case she brought up the previous day. Similar to how the two musketeers in the novel would leave Rainbow Roses on each of their victims, a Rainbow Rose was found at the crime scene. The Traveler decides to join her to assist in solving the case, and the three detectives immediately set off to find clues.
The group first visits Leschots Clockwork Workshop to see if any firearm components were recently purchased, or any components for personal use. Unfortunately, Livre didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. They then visit Beaumont Workshop to check for firearm components, only to learn Estelle doesn't even make prop guns. However, she also states she sells scrap mechanical components to Fleuve Cendre. Paimon expresses hesitation at the Captain of the Special Patrol being in the slums of the Court of Fontaine, but Chevreuse brushes it off, revealing she grew up there.
In the underground sewers, the trio find multiple leads, First, someone trying to clean up their practice shots, even though the multiple people in Fleuve Cendre who own guns don't even try to hide the fact. The trio speak to Emerald, however she is unwilling to hand over any information freely, which leads Chevreuse to buy the information from her with Mora. Finally, they headed to the bar, where Tetreaux revealed a gun was left three days ago and was not used whatsoever.
Before leaving, Chevreuse recounts her theory of the case: the suspect found the gun a month ago and examined it, before returning it and making his own. Then he found and killed his target a few days ago, leaving the Rainbow Rose with his body just like the novel. Unfortunately this leaves them no closer to finding the murderer, though the Intel they gathered from Tetreaux revealed that the victim was a solitary man from the east side of Fleuve Cendre. However, the man did not have any enemies and was not a noble like in the novel. Chevreuse also reveals that the novelist had an alibi and didn't have a motive or the personality. With the case currently at a dead end, the group agrees to hold off on investigation until filming is done.
Act III - The Lone Isle Glimpsed Through Fog[]
- The Lone Isle Glimpsed Through Fog
Over the next few days, Furina and the rest of the cast continue producing the film, while the investigation into the murder progresses in the background.
At the outskirts of the Opera Epiclese, Furina begins the final scene of the film, where Iris and Tulipe kill the Baron, avenging their mother. Furina is impressed that the scene was completed in one take, asking Ayaka to consider staying in Fontaine as an actress. Ayaka declines the offer, as her duties in the Yashiro Commission come first. Furina finds it a shame, but states the offer still stands if she reconsiders in the future.
Chevreuse then calls the Traveler and Paimon over, having developed a new lead in the murder case. After sending the Rainbow Rose to Emilie, she informed her that the Rainbow Rose that was found at the scene came from a very rare cultivar that only grew in one place in the entire nation - the novelist's house. While she is confident that he was not the murderer, it doesn't rule out the possibility that the true culprit might have gotten the flowers from him. They pay a visit to the house, where they find several Clockwork Meka patrolling the grounds. Chevreuse snipes the meka from afar before they begin to collect evidence, with her knocking on the door.
The novelist, Baptiste, admits that he was the murderer, claiming that he was not able to reach the true mastermind of the plot. However, he asks for a private conversation with her, forcing the Traveler and Paimon to walk away. In the conversation, Baptiste expresses skeptism that the culprit would be found, as it had been twenty years since his mother's death, and that even if he was found, he would likely live a comfortable life in the Fortress of Meropide. He thus asks her to kill the culprit if the chance arises.
Chevreuse then returns to the pair, telling them that Baptiste would be heading to headquarters with an escort and that he gave them the identity of the real culprit. The Traveler notes that she's keeping something from them, but she then asks them for help with another matter.
Act IV - Where the Roses Bloom[]
- Where the Roses Bloom
A few days pass since Chevreuse's new lead on the case, resulting in the other members of the cast wondering of her whereabouts as the crew is almost done finishing up the film. Morris also returns, surprised that the film was going well. As Furina starts up the finishing scenes, the Traveler notices that their Kamera is not working. They manage to get a new one and begin the final scenes, just as Bonnot rushes in and informs Furina that the film had gone missing. The crew then set out to find the film, with Chiori finding it in the sewers and the group is busy seeing if anything was damaged. Furina is relieved that the film was found. Paimon wonders as to who would sabotage them at the last moment, though Furina states that they need to finish filming first.

With the remaining scenes wrapped up, Furina decides to celebrate by hosting a beach party. During the celebration, Yoimiya ropes Morris into helping her gather some fireworks, but after they enter the building, Morris hears a gunshot, and finds Yoimiya on the floor. This terrifies Morris as he demands to be let out, only for Chevreuse to appear, who intimidates him into admitting to his crimes. Though she points her musket at him, Chevreuse does not shoot him, instead stating that he's under arrest for Elisa's murder. She then senses someone behind her, who fires a shot at Morris, but she blocks it with her musket and states that Veronique, the shooter and prop manager, is also under arrest.
Yoimiya is surprised by the turn of events, while Veronique asks Chevreuse why she was not letting her get revenge on Morris. Morris also wonders as to what was going on, with Chevreuse explaining that it was all meant to make him confess to his crimes. She asks Yoimiya to bring the other Special Patrol members in and inform the rest of the crew that they were fine. With his guilt admitted, Chevreuse demands Morris tell them the truth. Morris does, stating that twenty years ago, he had an illicit affair with Elisa and left her pregnant, who was serving at his parents' estate as a maid. Believing that his parents would throw him and his inheritance out if the affair was revealed, he asked Elisa to leave, giving her plenty of Mora and to also get rid of the baby. Instead, she kept it to term and gave birth to two children and sent a photo of them to him sometime later. Having gotten into another relationship which would ruin him if word got out, he then hired someone to kill her.
Veronique reveals the fear she and her brother had when their mother was killed, and thus wanted revenge against the very person that caused them suffering. Chevreuse reveals that she already knew that he had killed the other man, as she could not feel a sense of regret from Baptiste and he could not reassemble the murder weapon at all. Thus, Baptiste had falsely admitted to the crime in order to distract the investigation and allow Veronique to kill the true suspect, but she had already suspected as much and Morris' own involvement in the film - he had signed up as an investor, but had intended to ditch them under "financial constraints" so the film would not advance. But to his expectations, Xavier had managed to finish the film, thus causing him worry and try to sabotage them.
Veronique is upset that Cheveruse was not upholding justice, having promised as such to her brother. Cheveruse admits that she was going to shoot him, but refrained as she knew that it was not proper justice, as there would be no society without it. However, she promises to inform Wriothesley to ensure that Morris would not live a comfortable life in prison. Yoimiya returns with Letellier and Turenna, who take the two into custody. Before she is taken out of the room, Veronique tells Cheveruse that she does not understand her reasoning and that justice was not served.
The Traveler then informs the rest of the crew of the truth, leaving Xavier shocked at the turn of events. Furina asks if they should do a reshoot, but Cheveruse declines, believing the current edition to be enough. Yoimiya then asks about Veronique; Cheveruse responds that her, Baptiste and Morris would all face judgement and would give Wriothesley "that" heads-up of their arrival. She then asks the Traveler and Paimon to wait for her by the sea after the party ends. Once there, Cheveruse gives them a short summary about her childhood, explaining her father's harsh training and why she joined the Special Security group. As they continue walking, they unexpectedly arrive at Baptiste's house, where they find the Rainbow Roses in full bloom.
Afterword - The Two Musketeers' Triumph[]
- The Two Musketeers' Triumph
After the suspects' arrests, the results for the winner of the Fontinalia Film Festival are preparing to be announced. Xavier asks the Traveler to fetch Cheveruse, who was busy escorting the accused to the Fortress of Meropide herself. The Traveler heads to the Administrative Area, where they find her talking to Wriothesley. She informs him about the three she would be bringing in; Wriothesley had not made any promises or guarantees regarding her "heads-up", though she also points out that he did not outright refuse her. Cheveruse, having sympathized with the siblings, asks Wriothesley to give everyone the latest copy of the Steambird when the case was revealed, which would make Baptiste and Veronique seen as heroes and Morris as the villain.
The three return to the venue just as the winner is announced; Xavier's "The Two Musketeers", who thanks his crew, the "Musketeer Pictures". Ayaka, having made a new friend in the form of Cheveruse, states that the city has exceeded her expectations. She then asks her if she would be willing to travel to her home nation of Inazuma, which Cheveruse accepts should she have the time. Chiori asks Ayato if he had accomplished everything he needed for the trip, which he confirms. She then asks about Ogura Textiles & Kimonos, pleased to hear that Ogura Mio is still doing well and asks him to send her regards. Finally, she learns that the thunderstorms surrounding Inazuma had gone, which Ayato confirms and that the islands are in peace and prosperity. Xavier then has Furina carry the Furina Award due to her invaluable assistance as a director, which she reluctantly does to avoid embarrassing herself.
