Huitzilopochtli, also known as the Sweeping Skyfire[1] and the "Natlan Phlogistonization Array,"[2] was a device created by Xiuhcoatl to transform all of Natlan into phlogiston in order to destroy the Abyss once and for all. It is located in the Heart of the Sacred Mountain.
Overview[]
Huitzilopochtli is a device that can transform Natlan, and eventually the entire world, into phlogiston and matter only composing of phlogiston. By burning everything, Huitzilopochtli will transcribe and replicate all information into phlogiston units. All life will either die or become phlogiston lifeforms. Huitzilopochtli can also destroy the Abyss by attaching Astral Assemblages to them and using mutual annihilation reactions against them.[2]
Draconic phlogiston lifeforms have the power to seize the authority over the primal flame and reshape life and the new world.[2]
The device is activated by reuniting the two Golden Entreaties, which were originally Xiuhcoatl's pupil. Three rounds of confirmation are required to either activate or deactivate the device. Towers were built over Natlan to allow Huitzilopochtli cover the entire land, but most of them were destroyed at Och-Kan's orders. [2]
History[]
Xiuhcoatl was frozen in lava by the Heavenly Principles after the latter was victorious against the Seven Sovereigns. Some time later, he is awakened from his sleep when the Dragon King Nibelung returned to Teyvat with forbidden knowledge from beyond the skies that contaminated the world. Nibelung was killed by the Heavenly Principles, and Xiuhcoatl, who had been "steeped in the Abyss," regained clarity of mind at that moment.[2] Seeing the disastrous effects of the Abyss on the world and knowing that his periods of clarity were becoming shorter and shorter, Xiuhcoatl decided to use the time and wisdom he still had left to create Huitzilopochtli to destroy the Abyss once and for all.[2]
Xiuhcoatl revealed his plan to his people, who all approved except for his younger brother Kukulkan. Kukulkan left Xiuhcoatl to find another path in humanity, but Xiuhcoatl believed that he would eventually walk the same path as him. He created the Secret Source Servants to help him maintain the device and transformed one of his pupils into a control hub for Huitzilopochtli. This became his sole weakness, which was exploited by Xbalanque and led to his death.
Xbalanque and Kukulkan split the pupil into two Golden Entreaties between them and made a pact to ensure that Huitzilopochtli would never be activated. Xbalanque eventually gave his Golden Entreaty to Och-Kan, who hid it in the skyship Tonatiuh. Och-Kan ordered the destruction of the towers anchoring Huitzilopochtli's areas of coverage, but didn't know that the carrier medium is small and delicate enough that a single stone could carry Iridescent Inscriptions.
Kukulkan hid his entreaty in the Hall of Parting Vows. After Xbalanque's ascension as the Pyro Archon, he believed that humans could succeed where dragons failed and create a civilization that was even more glorious. After Xbalanque's departure, Och-Kan took the reins of Ochkanatlan and united the tribes, forming the Grand Alliance, over which he ruled as the sole sovereign. He also took Xbalanque's half of the Golden Entreaty and hid it on Tonatiuh, the sky cable, spinning it and changing its trajectory as he did so.[2] Witnessing Och-Kan's rebellious actions and his contempt for the dragons, Kukulkan lost all faith in humanity and urged his son to activate Huitzilopochtli, but Och-Kan refused.[3] Following the Scarlet-Eyed Youth's rebellion, which led to Och-Kan’s downfall, Kukulkan used Och-Kan, now a fell dragon, to devour human souls and fashion masks for himself. At the same time, he spread rumors about the second Golden Entreaty, hoping that someone would eventually unite both pieces and bring them to Tollan.
During the current events of the game, the Traveler, along with their Saurian companion, Little One, retrieves both pieces of the Golden Entreaty and successfully makes their way to the Heart of the Sacred Mountain, where Huitzilopochtli lies. They go on to fight the Primeval Source Dragon Mech, which acts as the guardian and the final trial before they can enter the chamber where Huitzilopochtli rests.
However, the Primeval Source Dragon Mech traps both the Traveler and Paimon in its laser jail. At this moment, Kukulkan appears before Little One, who is trying to help the Traveler but fails. Kukulkan shares the history of the dragons with Little One and speaks of the choice it must make. He urges Little One to decide quickly, as Tollan's power reserves are nearing depletion and the Dragonborn who have already phlogistonized themselves will perish if the authority over the Primal Flame is not claimed.
In the end, Little One chooses not to activate Huitzilopochtli, much to Kukulkan’s chagrin. As Little One returns to the Traveler to help defeat the Primeval Source Dragon Mech, Kukulkan attempts to stop it but fails. Eventually, Tollan's maintenance functions cease, and the phlogistonized Dragonborns, along with Kukulkan, fade away, while Huitzilopochtli becomes obsolete.[2]
Trivia[]
- If the option to activate Huitzilopochtli is chosen, Natlan is struck by its initial impact, after which the Primal Flame gradually engulfs the rest of Teyvat. Eventually, the Abyss is permanently banished, leaving the Little One as the only remaining consciousness.[2]
Etymology[]
- Huitzilopochtli is the solar and war deity in Aztec religion. He wielded Xiuhcoatl, the fire serpent, as a weapon, thus also associating Huitzilopochtli with fire.
