This is a page layout guide for non-playable characters. All character pages should follow the standards of this guide.

Feel free to discuss improvements to this guide through this page's Talk page, the discussion board, or the wiki's Discord server.

Note: This guide assumes the editor is using Source Editor.

  • Create new pages using premade templates for easier and consistent edits. Please hide unused sections instead of deleting them by using the HTML comment tag:
    <!-- content here -->
  • Use {{CharacterTabs}} when content is too long for the main page. The format will be similar to a playable character's Lore or Media subpage.

Section Order

For consistency, all articles must follow a general layout.

Page Name

  • Character page names should use the name in dialogue or the name above the character.
  • If the character's name changes after meeting certain conditions, the page should be moved to the updated name.
Notable Examples

Meta

{{Meta
|missing_NPC_picture  = yes
|missing_NPC_location = yes
|missing_NPC_context  = yes
|missing_NPC_profile  = yes
|missing_NPC_idle     = yes
|missing_NPC_dialogue = yes
}}

The {{Meta}} template is used by editors to keep track of pages that have missing information. It is placed at the very top of the page, usually before the infobox. Lines must be removed when conditions are either fulfilled or inapplicable.

missing_NPC_picture Refers to the character's image in the infobox.
missing_NPC_location Refers to map screenshots of the character's location in the open world. This is not required for quest and event-exclusive NPCs.
missing_NPC_context Refers to in-game screenshots of the character's location in the open world. This is not required for quest and event-exclusive NPCs.
missing_NPC_profile Refers to the Profile section (includes Appearance) which should be filled in. This is not required for characters that do not appear in quests.
If there is not enough information to be added, removal of this is at the editor's discretion.
missing_NPC_idle Refers to a character's idle dialogue in the open world.
missing_NPC_dialogue Refers to a character's dialogue when the player interacts with them in the open world.

The {{Character Infobox}} template is used here. See the documentation for more details on other possible parameters.

Notable Examples
  • Kurisu — a character located in Inazuma but hails from Fontaine. He has most standard parameters filled.
  • Lyudochka Snezhevna — an NPC with an element (Delusion) and two different appearances.
  • Alrani — an NPC who is found in two nations and hails from a third nation.
type Open-World NPC refers to characters in the open world, and also includes characters that become permanently available after completion of quests.
Quest NPC refers to characters that can only be encountered during quests.
Event NPC refers to characters that can only be encountered during events.
Mentioned (previously Historical) refers to characters referenced in books, item descriptions, and other sources of lore. This category also encompasses mentioned characters in the present day.
deceased Filling this parameter adds the Deceased Characters category. This should answer when a character was deceased, but not why. The main source of information for a character's death should exist within the main article. Example entries:
  • Killed by Raiden Shogun in Duel Before the Throne
  • May be killed by Traveler in Shuumatsuban Operations — For characters with deaths that are optional (by player's choice)
  • Killed during the cataclysm 500 years ago
  • Past — For characters who died before the game's events with unclear causes of death. This will add "Deceased prior to the game's events" in the infobox. See Ruu for example.

Characters whose death remain ambiguous or under speculation should not have this filled.

image As much as possible, images should show the character in daylight while facing the sunlight, positioned to face the camera while standing in a neutral pose. The preferred image dimensions are 500x900px or any equivalent variations that fill the infobox. A 1:1 aspect ratio is preferred if the characters are too close or short. The images shouldn't be distorted or have a fish-eye effect. See Kemia, Mr. Bai and Sorush for an example.

For a list of photos that need to be retaken, please see Category:Better Quality Needed.
realname This should only be filled if the character's real name is different from their name displayed in-game (e.g., Pallad as Reckless Pallad).
region This parameter refers to the region(s) the character calls home, hails from, or has other notable ties to. See Verr Goldet for an example.

For characters with ties to two or more regions, it is preferred for the first region to be the region that they consider their home.
location This parameter refers to the region(s) where the character can be found in-game. When a character has more than one location, it is preferred for them to be listed in chronological order (see Atsuko for an example).

Open-World NPCs who are temporarily found in another region as part of an event or for a gameplay mechanic, such as Genius Invokation TCG's Weekly Guest Challenge, should not have that region listed as a location. For example, Ying'er could be found in Mondstadt during the event Windblume's Breath, but she should not have Mondstadt listed as a location.
title The title written under the NPC's name or an alias they go by. Titles take priority over aliases. The primary title should take the latest title shown in-game. (See Wanyan)
voiceEN
voiceCN
voiceJP
voiceKR
The voice parameters should contain a reference (<ref></ref>). It should cite the source where the character's voice actor is confirmed by official Genshin Impact media or by the actor themselves. (See Help:Cite). IMDb and Moegirl are not acceptable sources for references.

CN, JP, and KR voice artists are usually listed with family name first. Voice artists may be listed with given name first if they are announced by HoYoverse or the voice artist is widely known with that name instead.

See Voice Actor § References for examples on how to do references for voice actors.

Introduction

  • The {{Lang}} template should only be used in the introduction sentence for characters whose names are in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, or Thai. The template should contain the name of the character using the transcript of the corresponding language.
    • Characters whose names are not unambiguously in one of the aforementioned languages should not have the template used.
    • Characters whose names are partially translated, such as Gentry Maocai, should have the template used if the rest of their name is in one of the aforementioned languages.
    • Romanization should be included, even if it is the same as the English localization.
    • No translations should be included. Translations can be added in Trivia or Etymology instead.
  • Dialogue branch reward sentence is only included if the character rewards an item after choosing correct dialogue options. (See Adelinde)
  • Characters that are revealed to have a similar appearance as a regular enemy do not need to have an archive image in the infobox, this information should only be added in text in Introduction. (See Enjou)
Notable Examples
  • Atsuko — changed Regions after completing a quest.
  • Domon — has a dialogue reward only after completing a quest.
  • Linyang — an event-exclusive character with a map marker during the event.
  • Aoi — general goods shop without a map marker.

Location

==Location==
<gallery>
NPC Location character_name.png|character_name's location
NPC Location character_name Context.png|Additional context
</gallery>
  • Characters that are not found in the open world should not have their locations recorded in the Location section. This includes characters that only appear during quests and events.
  • Permanent open world NPCs should only have permanent location in this section.
  • Characters with different locations depending on time of day may have more than one set of images in the gallery. See Quinn for example.
  • Context images must be taken via Photo Mode.
    • The image must hide the player's character and personal information (username and UID) and show the Genshin Impact logo.
    • Images should be taken from a good distance where the character is visible and recognizable.
    • The image should provide enough context clues or landmarks on the character's location.
    • Have 16:9 aspect ratio.
  • Location and context images may be shared between multiple characters. See Manager Kuan, Yiran, and Granny Shan for example.

  • Example: NPC Location Granny Shan, Manager Kuan & Yiran.png
  • If there are multiple characters in one image, include the name of the NPCs the image will be used for, separated with a comma.

Profile

==Profile==
===Appearance===
  • The whole Profile section may be omitted if the character is not involved in any quests or there isn't enough information to be added.
  • If Profile is applicable to a character, please do not hide or add a stub to the sections that have no information yet. Instead, add ''(To be added.)'' under the corresponding section. This keeps it available for editors to add new information. (See Adelinde)
  • The character's background or history is written directly under the Profile heading.
  • Keep the Appearance section short and concise. Limit this section to two paragraphs with three to four sentences each.

Quests and Events

==Quests and Events==
{{Quests and Events}}
  • {{Quests and Events}} is used here.
    • This template creates a list of quests a character appears in based on the category [[Category:character name Appearances]].
    • If a quest is missing in the list, go to the quest page and add the character in the character parameter of the {{Quest Infobox}} template.
    • If the character takes part in an event but does not appear in any of its quests, or the event does not feature any quest, go to the event page and add the character in the character parameter of the {{Event}} template.
  • Brief appearances in cutscenes and voice-over are included.
  • Mentions in quest or event dialogue are not included.

Idle quotes are a transcription of a character's voice-overs that can be heard in the open world without prompting dialogue.

  • Characters that have idle quotes that change based on time of day must have the time requirement noted above the dialogue using parentheses. See Bruce for example.
  • If a character obtains exclusive dialogue during events or upon completion of quests, note the unlock requirements in bold headings above the dialogue.
  • Idle dialogue from event-exclusive characters should have no headings that indicates which event it's from, unless the NPC has appeared in multiple events.
