These are the General Guidelines for all articles on the Genshin Impact Wiki.
This wiki is generally written in American English — in accordance with the English localization of Genshin Impact — and may also use some specific rulesets which may be different from other wikis or communities. Please read this page carefully to maintain consistency across the wiki.
Do not add content generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
More content should be added to this page should issues arise.
Feel free to discuss improvements to this guide through this page's Talk page, the discussion board, or the wiki's Discord server.

Grammar and Spelling
In accordance with the English localization of the game, the Genshin Impact Wiki follows the following rules:
- Use the American spelling of words.
- Use the serial comma (also known as the Oxford comma).
- Use "neutral" (straight) quotation marks (" " and ' ', not “ ” and ‘ ’) and apostrophes (', not ’).
- Use double quotation marks for quotations. When nesting quotations, use single quotations. For example: Paimon exclaimed: "What do you mean 'hehe'!?"
- Place commas and periods within the quotation marks. ("Like this," not "like this".) This does not apply to other punctuation.
Date and Numbers
- Present dates in the format
YYYY/MM/DD, orMonth DD, YYYYwhen written out. - Present times in the format
HH:MM AM/PM (UTC±X). The hour should always include a leading zero when it is a single digit. When presenting a time in the 24-hour clock format, omit the AM/PM. - Delimit numbers exceeding 999 into groups of three digits with a comma.
Symbols
- Use a proper multiplication symbol (× or
&), not the letter X (x).times; - Transcribe em dashes (—) as they are shown in the game (written
&). Do not replace it with the en dash (–) or two hyphen-minuses (--).mdash;
Deviation from In-Game Text
Grammar and spelling errors in transcriptions of official Genshin Impact material should not be corrected, but rather highlighted using the sic template. Erroneous translations should also be noted using a reference note or added to the Trivia section if it impacts understanding of the game's gameplay or lore. The Wiki will be updated after HoYoverse (miHoYo) corrects the localization errors.
Article Titles, Sections, and Headings
Titles and Headings
- Use title case for article titles and section headings, unless the in-game title is not in title case.
- For example: Kazuha's Friend, not Kazuha's friend, but A log of ships coming in and out by Little Fei
- Page titles must be singular by default; page introductions may be plural if desired.
- For example: Archon, not Archons.
- Exception are:
- Item names (Rukkhashava Mushrooms)
- Location names (The Serpent's Bowels)
- Organization and "organization" names (Knights of Favonius, Treasure Hoarders, Fatui, Four Winds)
- X in Teyvat (Martial Arts in Teyvat)
- Do not use "A," "An," or "The," as the first word of an article title or section heading, unless it is inseparable or part of the in-game title.
- For example: Fatui, not The Fatui, but The Seven and The Widsith
- Do not use links or references in section headings.
- Do not add whitespaces before or after section headings.
- For example:
==Section==, not== Section ==.
- For example:
Section Organization
Redirects
- Do not create redirects or disambiguation pages for generic titles, even if they have only ever been used by one character.
- Acceptable: Narukami Ogosho, Grand Master
- Not acceptable: Duke
- Do not create redirects for forms of address.
- Not acceptable: Her Majesty
- Full name and alias redirects of characters should only be made if they are used in in-game material such that a link would be convenient to use.
- Acceptable: Diluc Ragnvindr, Xingyan
- Not acceptable: Mao Xiangling
- For technical reasons, appropriate redirects may be created when any of the following is true of a page name:
- Contains a diacritic
- Begins with any punctuation mark
- Ends with a question mark
Article Content
- Do not create empty, placeholder, or barely-filled pages that would require more effort to fix than to simply rewrite from scratch.
- When creating pages, it is strongly recommended to use the appropriate page template instead of copying an existing page, as the page templates may be more up-to-date and have better syntax than existing pages.
- Bold the first use of the page title in the article, which is typically in the first sentence.
- Do not include links within this bolded portion.
- The usage of most magic words in articles is disallowed, with the exception of the following:
- Behavioral switches
- __TOC__ — shows the Table of Contents at the position of its usage
- __NOTOC__ — hides the Table of Contents
- Technical metadata variables
- — commonly handled by infoboxes
- Page name variables, only to be used with subst: to avoid issues on transclusion, should be used inside to avoid HTML entities being left on the article.
- — full page name without namespace (e.g., Module:Talent Upgrade/data → Talent Upgrade/data)
- — full page name with namespace (e.g., Module:Talent Upgrade/data → Module:Talent Upgrade/data)
- — full page name without the lowest subpage (e.g., Xiao/Voice-Overs/Chinese → Xiao/Voice-Overs)
- — lowest subpage's name (e.g., Xiao/Voice-Overs/Chinese → Chinese)
- — root page's name (e.g., Xiao/Voice-Overs/Chinese → Xiao)
- Behavioral switches
- Terms should only be linked the first time they appear on the page after the infobox. A term may receive another link the first time it appears in a section if the preceding content is exceptionally long.
Vocabulary
- Avoid using second person (i.e., "you"). Possible alternatives include using "players" or "the Traveler" or rephrasing the sentence to use passive voice.
- For example, replace "(If you have completed A Teapot to Call Home)" with "(If A Teapot to Call Home has been completed)."
- Second person in the form of commands is acceptable in the following cases:
- Navigational aids (e.g., "See also").
- Additional instructions to help players in the "Steps" section of quest pages (e.g., when players must locate an NPC without a quest marker).
Names
- The Lang template should only be used in the introduction sentence for characters whose names are in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, or Thai. The template should contain the name of the character in the corresponding localization.
- Characters whose names are not unambiguously in one of the aforementioned languages, such as Thoma, should not have the template used.
- Characters whose names are partially translated, such as Gentry Maocai, should have the template used if the rest of their name is in one of the aforementioned languages.
- Romanization should be included, even if it is the same as the English localization.
- No translations should be included. Translations can be added in Trivia or Etymology instead. For playable characters, these sections are on their Lore subpages.
- The inclusion of the surnames and titles of a character depends on where it is used.
- For playable characters:
- On the character's own page, the first use of their name (in the first sentence) should be their complete full name, including surnames. For example: Astrologist Mona Megistus.
- On pages other than the character's own, the first use of their name should be their display name in-game. For example: Kamisato Ayaka.
- Subsequent use of the names of characters from Mondstadt or Inazuma should be their given name only. For example: Itto.
- Subsequent use of the names of characters from Liyue should still be their display name in-game. For example: Hu Tao.
- Pay attention to name order to help determine what their given name is. While in most Western countries names are written with their given name first, that is not the case in many Eastern countries. In Mondstadt, the given name is written first, while in Liyue and Inazuma, the given name is written last.
- For non-player characters (NPCs):
- Address them by the given in-game name (as an NPC), or, if they are not present in the game, use their name as described in any text or dialogue in-game.
- For playable characters:
Italics
Italics must be used in the following types of names or titles:
- Achievement categories
- Achievement titles
- Albums
- Book titles
- Quest names
- Act names
- Scientific names
- Ship/vessel names
- Video games
Introductions and Overviews
The introduction of a page is the content between the infobox and the first section of the page. Introductions should be short and succinctly summarize the topic of the page. They should ideally be no longer than one paragraph, but two paragraphs may be acceptable for certain topics.
Overviews are sections titled Overview and are similar to introductions. They may be a little longer than two paragraphs. Not all pages need an Overview section, and pages that do use an Overview section should have extremely short introductions, generally no longer than one or two sentences.
Unconfirmed Information
This wiki does not supply information that cannot be clearly obtained in-game or via official media, except for certain matters pertaining to lore (see the subsection below). This means that seemingly or partially predictable information will not be added to the wiki, including but not limited to the following:
- A character's element if they are not clearly seen either with an identifiable Vision or wielding a distinguishable element
- An upcoming playable character's gameplay weapon if it has not been announced by HoYoverse
- Future Versions and their dates if they have not been announced by HoYoverse
Although this information cannot go into article content, users are free to discuss them, as long as they abide by the Community Rules.
Lore
Because the Genshin Impact story is ongoing and has also deliberately left information pertaining to certain topics vague, article content about lore may contain information that was pieced together or requires making assumptions. Such content should be accompanied by explanatory notes. Anything that is too speculative should go into the Trivia section, and even then, it is still highly subject to deletion.
Trivia
While trivia is naturally trivial information, trivia should still be relevant and noteworthy enough to contribute to the reader's understanding of the article.
Trivia should not be added if it is simply a "fun fact." As such:
- "Counting" trivia, such as "This character is the third to die on-screen," is strongly discouraged for the second instance and prohibited for the third instance and beyond.
- Do not try to get around this by adding minor details to make something become the first of a specific but insignificant kind of the original case. For example, "This character is the first character to die on-screen in a flashback" is prohibited if it would normally be "This character is the third to die on-screen," as there is nothing remarkable about a character specifically dying in a flashback on-screen.
- Trivia about shared voice actors is prohibited for characters that have no in-universe relation to each other, except for cases where a Genshin Impact character is likely to be an "iteration" or "expy" of a character from another game by miHoYo.
- In order for a character to be considered an "iteration" or an "expy," they must have a substantial amount of similarities or other points of comparison that are specific to those characters and cannot be explained as ordinary popular tropes in media.
References
- Do not add explanatory notes into references. Create a reference group for these notes and display them separately.
- The reference group and the section heading for these notes should usually be named Note and Notes, respectively.
- No more than 2 references should be used for the same claim.
- When placing references or notes in the same group together, they must be ordered in ascending numerical order. (E.g., [2][5] and [Note 2][Note 5], not [5][2] or [Note 5][Note 2].) Note that numbers are automatically assigned, so it is strongly recommended to preview the page to help order references.
- When references and notes are used together, references must be placed before notes. (E.g., [2][Note 1], not [Note 1][2].)
- When placing notes in different groups together, they must have the same order as the invoked lists of notes. For example, if a page lists notes from the Note group first and the Assumption group second, then a claim that has notes from both groups should look like [Note 5][Assumption 3], not [Assumption 3][Note 5].
- Notes should be used sparingly. While attaching something like [1][5][Note 2][Note 3][Assumption 2] to a claim would technically be correct and compliant, there might be better ways to present that information. Alternatives that can be considered are condensing notes, directing readers to Trivia, and even integrating the information into the article body when appropriate.
- Ref templates are used to automate reference formatting for editors. In addition to quests, most in-game items have templates.
