Frozen is the Elemental Reaction triggered by inflicting Cryo on a target that is already affected by Hydro or vice versa.
Unlike most other elemental reactions, Frozen by itself deals no damage. Instead, this reaction immobilizes enemies and applies a glowing Frozen status above their head for a certain period of time. The duration of Frozen is based on the lowest remaining duration of the two elements applied. This elemental reaction also allows for a follow-up reaction, Shatter, to be performed with a Blunt Attack from Claymores, Plunging Attacks, Explosions, or Geo DMG. Shatter behaves like an elemental reaction but deals Physical DMG.
Frozen can be ended prematurely by triggering any elemental reactions, including Shatter (and excluding Frozen). The Frozen status can be reapplied on Frozen opponents, but with a shorter duration.
Duration
The duration of the Frozen state on enemies and players is determined by the weaker of the two elemental auras applied to trigger this reaction.
In the open world, portions of most bodies of water can be Frozen by Cryo attacks and objects such as Cryo Slime Exploding Barrels. This ice can be Melted instantly and can cause Superconduct when near Electro-Charged water or when attacked with Electro.
The Frozen water's duration is determined by the amount of Cryo gauges that an ability applies, but Kaeya's Elemental Skill 'Frostgnaw' is an exception.
Shattered
Shatter is triggered when a Frozen target is hit by a Blunt Attack.
Shattered damage is only affected by the level and Elemental Mastery of the character causing the reaction and the enemy's physical resistance. It ignores the target's defense stat and the attacker's attack stat, and it also cannot deal critical hits.[1]
Shatter occurs before any elemental damage, potentially preventing some reactions. However, the initial element of the Frozen reaction can still persist or be reapplied under the freeze, causing the element to remain after the freeze ends (ex. Let the Show Begin > Frostgnaw > Starfell Sword will remove the freeze through Shatter then Crystallize the Hydro effect underneath).[2]
Character Level | 1 | 10 | 20 | 30 | 40 | 50 | 60 | 70 | 80 | 90 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Base Damage | 26 | 51 | 121 | 204 | 311 | 485 | 734 | 1,150 | 1,619 | 2,176 |
The elemental mastery bonus and any enemy resistances are applied multiplicatively with the base damage.
Frozen Element

Comparison between the Cryo status icon (left) and the Frozen status icon (right)
The Frozen element is the sister element of Cryo. The status icon for the Frozen element is similar to that of the Cryo status, but with an animated glow around it.
The Frozen element functions similarly to Cryo, but has three major differences:
- Does not react with Hydro.
- Does not apply the animation speed debuff.
- The Frozen gauge can be depleted by Poise Damage from Blunt Attacks.
The Frozen element can be applied in several ways:
- Triggering the Frozen reaction
- Applied to enemies with a Frozen shield.
- All "Cryo" shields used by enemies are in reality of the Frozen element, as indicated by the status icon.
- Applied to certain enemies indefinitely, such as Cryo Slimes and the Cryo Hypostasis.
- Applied to to characters with certain Talents.
Frozen Status to Self
The following Talents apply Frozen to its user and/or the active character. 1 Talent matches the category selection:
Character | Name | Description | Type |
---|---|---|---|
Fires an Icy Paw that deals Cryo DMG to opponents and forms a shield on hit. The shield's DMG Absorption scales based on Diona's Max HP, and its duration scales off the number of Icy Paws that hit their target. Press Rapidly fires off 2 Icy Paws. Hold Dashes back quickly before firing five Icy Paws. The shield created by a Hold attack will gain a 75% DMG Absorption Bonus. The shield has a 250% Cryo DMG Absorption Bonus, and will cause your active character to become affected by Cryo at the point of formation for a short duration. |

Change History
- Fixes an issue whereby the Shatter reaction could incorrectly inflict very high DMG to the Cryo Shields of the monsters Large Cryo Slime and Frostarm Lawachurl and the shields of the monsters Ice Shieldwall Mitachurl and Ice Shield Hilichurl Guard. The problem has been fixed, the amount of DMG dealt is the same as in Version 1.5 and previous versions.
