Elemental Absorption refers to how certain certain Anemo skills can absorb one of the four elements Electro, Pyro, Hydro or Cryo on its first contact with such an element and then become infused with that element, dealing damage of that type in addition to Anemo damage.

Generally, only one element can be absorbed per use. If multiple elements are present, there appears to be a priority for which element is absorbed.

Additional elemental damage dealt by skills that have absorbed an element should not be confused with Swirl damage. Swirl damage is fixed damage based only on character level and elemental mastery, while additional elemental damage from elemental absorption is regular damage and is thus affected by the stats that normally affect damage, including attack, critical hit rate and damage, and elemental damage bonuses.

Kaedehara Kazuha Kaedehara Kazuha Kazuha Slash Kazuha Slash The signature technique of Kazuha's self-styled bladework — a single slash that strikes with the force of the first winds of autumn, dealing AoE Anemo DMG. The blade's passage will leave behind a field named "Autumn Whirlwind" that periodically deals AoE Anemo DMG to opponents within its range.
Elemental Absorption: If Autumn Whirlwind comes into contact with Hydro/Pyro/Cryo/Electro, it will deal additional elemental DMG of that type. Elemental Absorption may only occur once per use.
Elemental Burst
Kaedehara Kazuha Kaedehara Kazuha Soumon Swordsmanship Soumon Swordsmanship If Chihayaburu comes into contact with Hydro/Pyro/Cryo/Electro when cast, Chihayaburu will absorb that element and if Plunging Attack: Midare Ranzan is used before the effect expires, it will deal an additional 200% ATK of the absorbed elemental type as DMG. This will be considered Plunging Attack DMG.
Elemental Absorption may only occur once per use of Chihayaburu.

Enemies

Like with talents, only one element can be absorbed per use. Enemies with attacks that have elemental absorption include

  • The Anemo HypostasisAnemo Hypostasis Tornado attack will absorb elements it comes into contact with. After dissipating they will leave energy orbs. When drawn into the Vacuum Burst attack the orbs will infuse the explosion with the absorbed element.
  • The shield of a Fatui Anemoboxer VanguardFatui Anemoboxer Vanguard can absorb an element and then reflect it as damage.

Elemental Sources

Many characters' elemental attacks can be sources for Elemental Absorption, including Xiangling's Guoba Attack, Bennett's burst Fantastic Voyage, Razor's Lightning Fang, and Beidou's skill Tidecaller. Elemental Slimes, burning grass, water, rain, and frozen water are also sources of elemental absorption. An element affecting the current character can also be absorbed. However, many other elementally infused attacks will not pass an element and cannot be absorbed.[1] Elemental shields including Diona's, Xingqiu's (from Fatal Rainscreen), and Xinyan's, and those from Geo reactions will not be infused in a reaction.

The absorbed element can further trigger elemental reactions, including swirl. Due to internal cooldowns for element application, it will typically only trigger a couple times. The final hit reapplies the element which was absorbed.

  • For example, one can use Venti's burst Wind's Grand Ode to absorb Pyro and then apply Hydro attacks to proc Vaporize reactions.

Absorption Priority

In cases where more than one element can be absorbed there seems to be a priority.[2]

For the Anemo Traveler, the priority is:

For other Anemo characters, the priority is:
