Contaminated Bacterial Mats are an exploration mechanic in Fontaine. They usually cover some body of water, preventing the player from entering. The contaminated cores can only be cleansed with the abilities of Xenochromatic Creatures.

In the wilds of Fontaine, you may occasionally encounter these overly-lively — perhaps due to outside influences — contaminated bacterial mats. The contamination clots and contamination cores within can be cleansed by the abilities of the Xenochromatic Ball Octopus and other Xenochromatic Fontemer Aberrants.

Due to evolution, sometimes contamination clots will link together with each other. If these connected contamination clots are not all cleansed, previously removed clots will regenerate.
Some contamination cores will be protected by an impenetrable shell, and the surrounding clots must all be cleansed before the shell is removed and the core can be attacked.
